For people or for pigeons?
These appear to be butternut squash ravioli, sitting in a large aluminum tray, on top of a tray of a different kind of ravioli. There are two trays in all, which have been placed on the sidewalk, uncovered, on 17th Street near South Van Ness, with an army of pigeons surrounding them. Someone has also scattered old loaves of bread in the gutter.
So...what's the story? Is it leftovers from a caterer or restaurant? If so, why not call the SF Food Bank and give the food to people? Has it been ruined, or spoiled? If so, why leave it on the street so homeless people might eat spoiled food?
Does anyone pay attention to the miserable mess an army of pigeons leaves on the sidewalks of a big city?
Maybe there's another answer?

These oddities are part of big city living and one of the reasons we all stay so curious (and confused). You would not see these raviolis in San Lorenzo or Fremont. Good eye, DD.
So THAT'S where they went. I set them down while I rummaged in my purse for my bus pass, and when I get home, I don't have them anymore.
Guess I shouldn't have yelled at the bus driver.
(Would someone really expect pigeons to be able to move the top tray to get at the bottom one? I'll bet/hope there is a better answer.)
You know how sometimes people put their purse or their coffee on top of the car because their hands are too full to open the door?
Some poor caterer at some poor bride's reception is a little light on the dishes of food.
